Empowering Cancer Survivors: Restoring Confidence and Quality of Life
"To lose confidence in one’s body is to lose confidence in oneself." This sentiment resonates deeply with oral cancer survivors who may face significant physical changes as a result of treatment aimed at controlling and preventing the spread of the disease.
Recognizing the profound impact of these changes, [Insert Year ICS Started or a similar relevant timeframe, if known, otherwise omit] a dedicated team has been diligently producing indigenous aids to support cancer survivors. This initiative, potentially inspired by models similar to those involving occupational therapist supervision, focuses on enhancing the quality of life for individuals affected by oral cancer with compassion, care, and empathy.
Our aim is to provide comprehensive support, including appropriate counseling on body image and the health implications of cancer treatment and any resulting prosthetic or assistive needs.
For patients affected by oral cancer, we focus on providing essential aids such as [Specifically list aids relevant to oral cancer, e.g., oral prostheses for speech and swallowing, facial prostheses for aesthetic restoration, etc. If specific aids are not mentioned in the original text and you lack this information, you can use a more general phrase like "various oral and facial prostheses and aids"]. These are made available to patients at a subsidized rate based on their eligibility.
Patients undergo thorough assessment, typically upon referral from their medical team, to ensure they receive the most appropriate aids.
Drawing inspiration from successful survivorship efforts elsewhere, where cancer survivors/patients are empowered to produce supportive devices, we envision a similar model for oral cancer. While specific production numbers for oral cancer aids are not available in this context, the distribution of over 7800 cervical cancer kits, 28000 breast prostheses, and approximately 46000 colostomy kits in the last five years highlights the potential impact of such initiatives in providing crucial support to economically challenged survivors.
The Global Oral Cancer Trust is committed to exploring and implementing strategies to provide similar practical and emotional support to oral cancer survivors, helping them regain confidence and live fulfilling lives.
